Who Really Has The Best 8-Man Teams?

Every now and then an explosion of “title counts” erupts from the east as they feverishly argue their point as to why they are the best in all of 8-Man Eligible; never mind what anyone else says.  Post after post, statement after statement you read someone's repetitive post about their National Titles, the best teams play here, you are nothing until you play us, yadda, yadda, yadda.....

But before we anoint them 8-Man’s greatest based on word of (their) mouth, let’s make a few comparisons to make sure the praise is well deserved.  Now outside of the DMV the ONLY 2 states that harbor the most 8-Man Eligible teams would be the states of Ohio and California – so let’s compare total National Titles to see who is “really” 8-Man Eligible’s best.

National Titles: 1983 to Present

  • Ohio – 12 National Titles (14 if you add the 2 Super National Titles the USFTL created)
  • California – 16 National Titles (17 is expected but for the sake of the argument we will say 16)
  • Maryland/DC – 11 National Titles (No Super National Title awarded)

NOTE: Never mind the fact that these states probably have more 8-Man Eligible teams playing in them then possibly all the other states combined; lets leave that little fact out of the equation for argement sake.

Now based on these numbers and the theories used to determine the best by some of the east coast teams, California actually has more National Titles than both Ohio and DC/MD and out of the three, the DMV is third following a hot start by Ohio out of the gate from 1983 to 1995 (right around the time kicking for 2 was made popular).  Because California has won the last 3 out of 4 National Titles, catching them will be difficult for the DMV at best.

But there is no need for the DC/MD area to worry, because they only need 3 more titles to catch Ohio and move into 2nd place, and that brings me to the next set of figures that proves that they will indeed catch Ohio (Who's numbers in 8-Man A are all but gone) sooner rather than later.

From 1998 to 2008, the percentage of DMV participating in the A division in Orlando went from 15% in 98, to 27% in 2002 to 33% in 2005 to a whopping 44% of the total team count in 2008!  So if this pattern stays true to form, DMV will catch Ohio in National Titles somewhere around the year 2013 and reach that 100% mark somewhere around 2020 when people really stop giving a damn.

But if you factor in the recession over a 2-3 year stretch, the mark of 100% DMV participation in Orlando can actually be reached by 2016-2017.  So technically, based on the logic being used by some to determine who the best teams are in all of 8-Man Eligible; Its’ California by 30% over Ohio and 35% over the DMV.

Wait a minute, I almost forget Vancouver, CA who has also had a National Championship for the last 20+ years.  They can boast their total on National Championship count somewhere around…..uuuuummmm  (calculator clicking)…… 20+ National Titles!  Wow!  And they are unbeaten; nobody from the US has won that title!  Imagine that?

So you see; Vancouver actually has the best 8-Man teams, which then drops the DMV into fourth place of 8-Man’s best teams behind Ohio, California and the mighty Vancouver!

Oh, what’s that you say?  Vancouver teams are not as good as you are?  Did you play them?  No?  So then how do you know?  Titles are determined between the lines, not between posts.
