LA Big $K Tournament Review
July - 2006

Daygo QB - Larry Scarsella
Ten teams battled in the California sun last weekend in the 2nd annual California Big $K Tournament. San Diego's Daygo Funhouse was the dominate team in a fairly matched tournament in Carson, CA. Funhouse defeated the Long Beach All-stars 12-0 in an impressive defensive effort in the championship game. Daygo Funhouse claimed a total of $4,000 (Cash and Credit) toward future MCFFU events and merchandise.
Long Beach cruised through the early rounds, but had a tough semifinal game against Denver Ace. Long Beach was able to get a 6-0 victory in a defensive struggle. L.B. entered the championship game confident and ready to defend their home field after running off consecutive tournament wins prior to this event.
Daygo's road to the championship began by defeating fellow San Diego Flag Football League member, Team Xavix in the quarterfinal and then beaingt Flash Football League champion South Bay Ballers in the semifinals. Long Beach entered as the favorite to win yet another tournament, but the Daygo defense had other ideas. Jesse Rodriguez returned an interception for a touchdown to help key the Daygo defense. The Daygo's defensive line created constant pressure on LB QB Scott McMahon all game. Funhouse forced Long Beach into some uncommon mistakes and frustrated them on offense all game.
The tournament also featured several new tournament teams 619, Sticky Icky and Team Bakersfield. All took there lumps, but showed improvement throughout the tournament. These teams will surely take what they learned this weekend and will be ready for the next tournament.
Veteran MCFFU tournament teams, 1st Choice and Ghetto Birds both had strong first days, but made an early exit on Sunday. South Bay Ballers and team Xavix both struggled to find a consistent offensive flow for the tournament. Denver Ace was a marked team, but showed that they are a team to watch in future tournaments.
The MCFFU would like to thank Matt Jordan, Neil Nelson (taking care of the referees) and the outstanding job all the referees did in this tournament. The next stop on the California MCFFU Tournament Trail will be in San Diego at Robb Field on August 19-20.
