Is The Flag World Flat or Round?
Understanding that flag football is still a recreational sport, the idea of catapulting the game to the next level would mean big overall changes. Certain aspects of the flag game have not been altered, changed or challenged for so long they have become flag axioms. The question is does flag need a better format for determining a champion or is the current format good enough? Is flag football just a recreational sport where identifying a true champion is not really that important or can it be much more? When determining a champion, is the flag world flat (current open-to-all formats are perfect) or is it round (there is a better way out there if searched for)? It depends on how its supporters view it and how its promoters promote it. The game can either be purely recreational or it can be pushed to mainstream.
Currently, all “Nationals” and “Championships” are open to all interested teams in order to draw bigger numbers and increase revenue. In today's flag, quantity always trumps quality so the doors are always open to whom ever can round them up and get'em there. The past methods of determining who the actual Flag Champion is have never been as important of an issue in the grand scheme of things as some may believe. It’s further down the Tournament Directors list, somewhere between whose running concessions and collecting waiver forms. But in reality, no other respected national sport allows their championship title left open to be literally purchased on the black-market by a group of guy’s with a ball, some game, good recruiting skills, extra time on their hands and cash. If that were the case, then what would be the purpose of competing the entire year to enter an “Open-to-All” tournament when you can save, recruit, combine and win by playing once when it matters? So you won’t have to play at 8AM? Some believe that a run at the title should be completed by a group that began the journey together, overcoming obstacles and earning their way there by meeting all the requirements set forth, eliminating the weaker teams along the way leaving only the best of the best to represent their league, city or region and compete for a true title - survival of the fittest is natures #1 law. |
