2005-06 Vegas REC Championship Recap The Buff's by way of two shut outs on Saturday earned the # 1 seed for Sunday's elimination format. They beat The Wolfpack from Vegas 13-0 and The Fighting Green Hornets from Utah 29-0. Last year the Buff's lost the Championship game to the All Stars from OH 31-29 and to get back to the Championship wasn't going to be easy. ( The Buff's were the 23rd seed last year) Saturday night came and the we knew we would be playing The Girls from NM. We knew some of the guys on this team since they were ex-Mules players. Toby Lockett said " One game at a time." This was not the same Mules team and the final score was 33-0.
This was the third straight shut-out for the Buff's defense but it would be a costly one. We as an offense had a chance to end it early with a two point conversation to get to 35 and failed. On the next possesion DB/WR Steve James pulled a hamstring. Next up was last years # 1 seed on Sunday Fresno Chaos. We had only faced Chaos once in the past and we knew that they had a good team with good team speed. Once again the Defense showed up big and as always the offense put up points in a 34-12 victory. At this point we knew that it would only get harder as teams we being eliminated. Justin Gernazio, Brian Brock, and Jerry Cordova stepped up.
I had watched Portland and their spread offense. I knew this was a huge match-up. This game would favor us again 18-6 and Captain Steve Brock would later say " That was the best team we played." This was the first time in 4 games that we were down 6-0. Our offense was slow in the first half but Wedo Gonzalez and Travis Morgan would change that in the second half with big receptions. The Sentinels were driving with the score still 6-0 and the big rush of Oye and Milk was there but they couldn't get flags. Big Merv was in on the action as well but the same result "No Flags." From the sideline QB/Captain Scott Alire said " June-bug were going in." With the big guys out and they did a great job All Weekend on the next snap Brock's QB sacked the Sentinels QB. Two plays later on the same drive Steve Brock sacked him again.
Travis Morgan said that was huge and a momentum changer "When our QB and Steve can go in and do what they did, I knew we were going to win." We were now back in the Championship game and what a great Job in the Sentinels game by the Buff's O-line. ( Doug Martin, Big Merv and Frankie) Prior to Vegas many had predicted this Championship. JJ from team Fresno who has won Championships vs The Brock's Buff's. There was controversy before the game even started. JJ was not going to be allowed to use an under sized ball. This did not make Team Fresno's Coach very happy but rules are rules. We scored first to make it 6-0 but on the extra point QB/Scott Alire was hurt, enter Steve Brock for one play. The game was back-n-forth. # 91 from team Fresno was causing all kinds of problems for the Buff's offense.
During the 1/2 time the offense huddled as did the defense. This was it a 1/2 to go and the memory of last years loss in the Championship. With the score Brock's 19 Team Fresno 6. Brock's was driving and was at the Fresno 1 yard line on 4th and goal. Wedo Gonzalez had seen a play earlier that might work. The ball was snapped QB/Alire stepped up and threw a dart to Gonzalez that should have been a touch pass high, it's intercepted and Team Fresno is running it up the Brock sidelines, Big Merv and the QB made the play with BIG MERV blowing up all those who tried to block him and Scott Alire getting knocked on his ASS.
Team Fresno's ball with under 6 minutes to play. Team Fresno scores on a play down the sidelines and gets the extra point to make it 19-13 Brock's. Can you feel it as you read this, it was going to be a classic ending. Team Fresno had 2 timeouts and the two minute warning. In the Brock's huddle. "We've been here before let's do what we do, play to win don't play not to lose." QB keeper, timeout Fresno, QB draw, two minute warning, QB draw, last timeout Fresno, 4th and 3 a first down would put it all away. In the Brock's huddle, Trips right, QB follow left behind Big Merv. Set, hut "Alire again will keep going opposite of the power formation, he's going to be stopped and shuffles the ball forward to Big Merv, first down, first down, Brock's Buff's are going to be Champions! Let the party begin.
This is about as accurate as a non-sports writer can be. It was one hell of a two day ride. Defense giving up only 31 points in 6 games and posting 3 shut-outs. Great job with that D, T-Lock. The offense scoring 146 points and that Old Fat QB only throwing 1 int in 6 games. The play of Recievers Smoot/Wedo. The young guns, B-Brock and Griz. The veterans a blocking back who gets no love but does his job well, Shaun Vanduvall. A true trooper in Steve James playing hurt and a under-sized Lb/Cb Beaver.
The best O-line around and don't forget about the big rush of 7,8,9 one more time. The smallest but most determined nose-guard in the country, Jeremy Hernandez. Who can forget a center that can't be covered "June-bug." The term "Sandbaggers" as some would say does not apply to this class act team. This team plays with heart and determination and along with the PRO Champion Denver Gamblers will represent the West well in Dallas but more importantly, Colorado.
Special thanks to Brock's Auto Body and Mr. Steve Brock, Brock's garage Doors LC, Mr. Joe Polito and the Beer Barrel, Mark Chorak with Caldwell Bankers, Mr. Ted Hernandez and Mr. Alan Marquez. See You all in Dallas Texas and oh yeah did I mention that Brent, Bobby and Robbie will make this trip???????? #1 , #8, #75 My hat goes off to Reg/Brian and the "U" Keep it up and keep it real. To all the teams in Vegas it was fun and Good luck in Dallas. MVP was QB/ Scott Alire who said "This whole team is the MVP |
